STAUNTON - Spirit Week will be taking place all week at the high school here.
On Sunday the students performed The Legend of Sleep Hallow before a packed audience
in the school auditorium. Homecoming king and queen candidates were introduced.
Later that evening, for the second year a bonfire was held behind the high school.
Principal Scott Tonsor thanked students, parents and others in the community
for supporting the school. The school week is filled with various activities.
Monday was Hawaiian Day. Tuesday was Twin Day; Wednesday is PJ Day. On Thursday
students will be voting to elect the new King and Queen. Voting will take place
before and after school as well as during lunch break. It is also designated
as Favorite Sports Team Jersey Day. Friday has been designated as Red, White
and Toga Day. The Homecoming Parade is set for 2:30 p.m. This year Greenville
will be making the trip to Staunton to play in the Homecoming Game. The Homecoming
Dance will be held Saturday evening from 8-11 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose room.
The doors will open at 10:30 p.m. so that parents and friends can watch the crowning.
Homecoming candidates this year are: Nick Baker, Antonino Cavataio, Jeffrey Coalson,
Jeromy Embry, Richie Fletcher, Lukas Pirok, Angie Best, Amanda Bond, Catherine
Brown, Darcy Bruhn, Nicole Dustman and Abbey Fey. |
$2,100
raised at Bike-A-Thon for St. Jude Children's Hospital
STAUNTON-The bike-a-thon held here on Saturday, September
27, raised more than $2100 for St. Jude Children's Hospital.
The money has been sent to St. Jude's
to help in the ongoing fight against childhood catastrophic diseases. The winner
of the boom box, was Hannah Keeton, who raised more than $1,000. A special
thank you goes out to the riders: Brittany Baker, Brooke
Baker, Devin Barrett, Dylan
Barrett, Larry Caldieraro, Sarah Keeton, Alex Laboray, Laura Large, Zoe Large,

Extrication
Challenge 2003 set for October 18
HAMEL - Somewhere, right now, there is an automobile accident that has trapped
its victim in the tangled wreckage. Without the dedication and training of local
firefighters and EMS personnel, these victims will die. Everyone is welcome to
bring your family, Oct. 18, at the Hamel fire department 401 old Rt. 66 North
and observe several of the Madison County Fire Departments present their expertise
and training that they have learned through a team effort. The event is set to
be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Extrication Challenge viewing is open to the
public. Judges from the T.E.R.C. Organization will be scoring the teams extrication
techniques. Trophies and ribbons will be awarded at the days end based on points
earned throughout the event. Food will be available along with numerous Fire
and EMS vendors, bring your lawn chairs and join the fun. For further information

Kwik
Konnection kicks off annual coloring contest
STAUNTON - The Kwik Konnection is kicking off its 6th
Annual Halloween Coloring Contest. The contest is open
to students, preschool through fourth grade, who
reside in the Staunton school district. Entry Forms will be at the Staunton
Elementary, St. Michael’s and Zion Lutheran School as well on page 11. Every child who enters
will win a prize. Watch for more details in next week’s newspaper. |

Volleyball Team Plays
Close Games
STAUNTON - The Varsity Lady Bulldogs played two games with close scores last
Thursday against the Hillsboro Hilltoppers at home in Staunton. Coach Odorizzi
subbed several players in and out of the game for the back and front rows making
the volleyball game exciting and using the players where they play best. The
first match was very close with the score being tied several times. The Bulldogs
trailed the Hilltoppers until Brittney Robeza and Ashley Reis made some excellent
spikes and Danielle Milkovich made some nice serves to tie the game at 18 to
18. After that, the game was a continuing battle for the lead. The Bulldogs ended
losing with a score of 24 to 26. The second match was also very close. The game
began with both teams struggling to get in the lead until Staunton pulled ahead
with a score of 13 to 9. The team got fired up when Reis and Stoverink made some
beautiful saves and Robeza made some firing red, hot spikes. Later, Hillsboro
came back to tie the score and then win the game with a score of 21 to 25. The
SHS Junior Varsity won 2 out of 3 games against Hillsboro with scores of 25-20,
19-25, and 25-20. On Monday, September 29, the Varsity lost against Carlinville
with the scores of 18-25 and 22-25. The JV also lost against Carlinville with
the scores of 24-26, 26-24, and 12-25 On Tuesday, September 30, the Varsity lost
against Vandalia with the scores of 17-25 and 24-26. The JV won their games with
the scores of 25-21 and 25-15. |
